Cheap, Printed Solar-Powered LEDs Could Change 1.5 Billion Lives [Solar Power]

I am really excited now. Just imagine we're on the verge of creating an abundant source of energy from the Sun! Once we have an energy surplus the limit is the Sun!!! If you've ever heard of free energy, this is it! Solar cells that will cover every single inch of our urban utopias. Coming soon folks!


Photovoltaic cells printed on sheets aren't news, nor are LEDs and ultrathin lithium batteries. What's news is a combination of the three which can help give light to 1.5 billion people who live in impoverished areas without access to electricity.
Frederik Krebs came up with this combination of solar panels and LED lights which, while definitely a work-in-progress, could bring cheap light to some of the world's poorest regions. I call the lamps a work-in-progress because despite being durable enough to last several years, they run at a mere 1% efficiency. But with the expected final cost of $7 a piece, they're full of life-changing potential, despite that low efficiency.

Some prototypes of the lamps are currently being tested in Zambia. As seen in the picture, the solar panels are left laying flat during the day and then rolled up (and secured with snap-button) into a cone-shaped lamp. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the results of the prototype tests and a final product, because no one should go without artificially lit nights. [IEEE Spectrum via Pop Sci]

Solar iPhone Charger Concept Has Another Use

Although it'll be awkward to have this iPetals solar charger out on the street, taking advantage of the sun to keep your phone charged is just smart.

SEI: Solar Energy International - My Stay in Oregon

Well, Last week I spent my week in Oregon. I went to Solar Energy International Workshop to begin my journey in becoming a solar partitioner. I have a few pictures I am going to share. Overall the experience was very pleasant.




The workshop was in a hotel, but it was really hands on. The course excluded a lab, but I plan on taking other coarse to have more hands on experience. I was learning on to install PV systems using Net-Metering Technology. Where your house produces energy and sells it back to the grid. It was pretty cool seeing all these peoples from different walks of life. I was introduced to some charters from the Coal, Electrical, HVAC, and Renewable Energy Installers.



The module we were playing with was the Solar World AG 175 watt Mono Crystalline Module. Don't be fooled, this module is 5 feet tall, and almost 3 feet wide. It is a big boy. Since Solar War was kind enough to come into the workshop and pitch the concept of Peak Oil, and gain more clients, I was Sold. That particular unit is something I plan to install next year on my house. We learned about typical series circuits and how to wire DC to inverter to AC. The real kicker was watching what the future of Solar Looks like. Enphase technology came out with a new product that blew me away. I have never seen anything like it, and it was worth the trip to learn about their product.



This is the Enphase inverter. What is unique about this product is, it makes Solar Install pretty much, Plug and Play. Traditionally when you install a system each module is connected together in a series circuit. If you were to shade one of the modules, you can lose as much as 80% efficiency on the whole system. This pesky problem changes with Enphase. When your wiring on the roof, you take the inverter and put it under the module. So instead of having to worry about DC power lines, you have AC power coming from the module on the roof. What you have to do now is connect all the AC together and wire it to your box. This really only takes minor technical experience. The best part is, if one of your modules is shaded it is completely isolated from the whole system. The power is transfered to your box, and Enphase also has a computing aspect to it. Using the AC cables, it sends information to a unit, that trackers your performance and uploads it to their servers. This information is accessible and you can have a profile in how your producing energy on your system. Pretty neat huh? I was pretty blown away. When I was talking to Ryan the other instructor, he told me that inverters would be integrated on the modules in less then five years time. So, Solar Industry is a Metaphor to how the Microchip industry was. Like Solar Cells, CPU became smaller and small originating from the transistor.


The enphase will become smaller and smaller and be incorporated onto the solar cell. All components will match and be universal and it will be PLUG and Play! Imagine how easy it would be to install systems, if anyone could do it.


This is a picture of the local food co-op. It was a real trip, because this is the first time I went to anything like it. Sure, it vibes like Whole Foods but it has a much better appeal. Since all the people are bread to function independently in this state as is. I was stoked to see how good the bulk department was in this store. They have everything, and they had agave nector on tap. Who has nector on tap! If your raw, this is a place for you. The store had a cafe, and modest display of frisbees.

The best part is, they are working on becoming as carbon neutral as possible. They bought a Ford Electric Vehicle so they can offset some delivery expenditures on fuel. I am pretty sure it is working well. They also have many renewable energies on site. Me being a LEED guy, I was impressed in How they weren't certified already.

 
They also feature a 2.5Kw~ PV system on their roof. The multi crystalline helps offset some of the energy the use. Of course they are using ultra efficient CFL T-8 Bulbs, but it is nice to see they are trying extra hard! The PV system is self explanatory, and you can tell it is very cloudy.
I hope you guys can read this. They have a 200+ Gallon rain barrel outside. It takes all of the water and strains it to make it somewhat potable. It isn't something you should drink, but it seems like during the summer they garden some herbs and use it as irrigation water. Good for them! This system is something, I plan to install on my house. Nothing as big as their kit, but defiantly thinking about off-seting some of my water expenditures. Also, check out this picture to put everything into perspective. 
I kid you not, but the top of the barrel is almost 6 feet high. Overall, I am very satisfied with my trip to Oregon, and I am looking forward to more solar training. The next big step for me is to install more Solar Cells.

ISEA SOLAR & WIND workshop notes

These are my notes from ISEA otherwise know as Illinois Solar. I have compiled these knows as detail oriented as possible. Please regard most of these facts as accurate. If your living in the Midwest you have to realize that Chicago is the Saudi Arabia of Cold. During the workshop ISEA covered First Solar Verse Solar Thermo
  • They are introducing the core of individuals to off the rack systems. The workshop focused on mechanical systems. Were not talking about passive & Solar architecture.
  • Their are two categories of Solar Thermal. They are Water Collectors + Air Thermal Collectors. Air can be translated into the living space.
  • ***Currently the world has 3.5 Million Buildings in the world with PV Cells***
  • There are roughly 200,000 in USA. 48,000 of these systems are Grid Tied
  • In Chicago we pay 11 cents a watt. In Hawaii they pay as high as 29 cents a watt
  • California + North East pay about 19 cents a watt
  • Chicago Has ~ 250 Grid Tied systems that produces about 2.5 Mega Watts
  • 70% of Solar Heating Systems are in China
  • There are 2000 systems in Illinois
  • 3.5 years of Solar Energy = all of the Coal in Illinois
  • Average home uses 600 kW a Month

Energy Efficiency > Renewable Conservation > Renewable Energy

  • ***The Solar Equipment faces the Sun relative of latitude. IL is 42 degrees Latitude ***
  • Every Dollar you spend on renewable energy saves you 2 dollars in the long run.
  • Thermal Solar: A lot of installers place the systems at +15 degrees up. These systems are usually fixed, because of the complications of piping. Moving parts = high maintenance fees.
  • Medium rise systems are used in IL
  • Surface Are of Pool = Surface Area of Low Temp Thermal Heating. This fact explains the thermal cells needed to heat the square footage of pool. 1 sq ft of thermal to 1 sq ft of surface of pool required.
  • Some thermal Units are sealed in vacuum to conserve thermal heat is not lost in winter. Steam circulates the evacuated tube.
  • If there isn’t enough load. The excess goes out to the grid. This is known as grid metering.
  • As of April net-metering law have been enacted. ( For IL. 2008)
  • IL State Fund= 5 Million Dollars. Pool of cash. For All Renewable
  • Green Tags. People pay to pollute (defined)
  • Home owner can invest 1 dollar of green returns 20 dollar value to home.

PV Solar Cells 25% Cheaper within 18 Months!!!


In conventional solar panels, the silicon that converts light into electricity is covered with a network of silver lines that conduct electrons and serve as connection points for soldering together the individual solar cells that make up a panel. The network consists of rows of thin silver lines that feed into thicker wires called bus bars. Day4 replaces these bus bars with a new electrode that consists of rows of fine copper wires coated with an alloy material. The wires are embedded in an adhesive and aligned on a plastic film. The coated copper wires run on top of and perpendicular to the thin silver lines, connecting them to neighboring cells. The new electrode conducts electricity better than the silver lines, resulting in less power loss. It also covers up less of the silicon than the bus bars, leaving more area for absorbing light.


Technology Review


Day4 Energy produces annually 47 Megawatts of solar panels a year. This is up from 12 megawatts a year from 2007. They are using cells with 14.7% efficiency which is in the process of transitioning to the 17-18% efficiency cells. Great news for anyone that wants a system. Currently, the market has a influx of $4 dollars a watt. If the new production techniques are applied we may see cells drop to $3 dollars a watt. Still expensive but we are on course to see a Solar Revolution Shortly.

19.9%: New Thin Film Solar Efficiency Record


The US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has created thin film solar panels that are very close to competing with their more traditional silicon-based cousins.



"The copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin-film solar cell recently reached 19.9 percent efficiency in testing at the lab, setting a new world record."

This means standard solar cells know and PV Cells are getting a run for there money. The current standard or 2nd generation Solar Cells are quickly being replaced by the upcoming 3rd generation PV Cells which may surpass current efficiency within 18 months time. The race is heating up!

By the end of the $13 million project, the roof will provide 1/5 of the facilities power and save "1,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year."

California building states largest Solar Farm



The endeavor is being taken on by Cleantech America based out of San Francisco. It will be completed by 2011, and the 80-megawatt farm will cover 640 acres of land. Once completed the maximum output for the system will generate enough for 21,000 homes!

Largest PV Solar Plant is Live in Nevada


This plant is only 14-megawatts. It pales in comparison to the Solana Generating Station rated at 280-MegaWatts!. The installation went live @ the Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. It was annually produce 30 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity. The energy will supply only 25% of the total base requirements. A system this large only provides a fraction of energy for those 12,000 individuals working on the base. Putting it into perspective this system spreads across 140 acres that are covered with 72,000 solar panels! Wow, that must be a pain to put together. More on the solar race coming soon!

The Solana Generating Station is one of the biggest in the southwest and it will produce enough energy to serve 70,000 customers. It will hopefully be operational in 2011 and it should create 1,500 construction jobs and 85 full time technical positions once open. Great start in the Solar Race!

Solar Power Satellite Sations

If not the here is the run down. The JAXA, or Japanese Space Agency is planning on putting 'Solar Island' into space come 2030. Which is pretty sweet because the Sun is only abundant!

The test begins with a floating micro blimp above a collector dish. JAXA plans on sending solar energy threw a 2.4GHz band similar to your cordless home phone. The test will only power a small heater, but the results are expected to create an array of wireless Solar Satellites. The Projects Goal is to produce a space platform that can generate 1 gigawatt of energy which is enough to power 50,000 homes.

I might be preaching to the choir, but didn't Tesla have a wireless machine?

Designer Solar Cells


The biggest argument against Solar Cells is the aesthetic value. Sure, to some people money is no object. They care about the cool factor and how sporty it looks. But fancy yourself with several Sharp PV Cells on your roof, well now that is really cool! With that aside many manufacturers are pumping out cells that are cute and customizable. These cells are printed as a film on translucent objects. Such as glass windows or 'designer shingles.' The technology is already being incorporated into windows but a new company was award the Nanotech Trade Fair seal of approval.


The semi-transparent solar modules combine the use of a special organic dye and nanoparticles that allow for the conversion of sunlight into electricity.


The cool thing about the process is, you choice from a variety of colors & patterns. Just like T-Shirts companies today, you will be able to choose words or even have custom designs.

The downside is, they are own @ 4% efficiency and they last about 7000 hours of continuous use. Booo! (a little less than a year)

What are Infrared Solar Panels? Well they are a great technology still locked up in a lab @ Idaho National Lab, but they have the potential to work in any weather conditions or even at night. These cells are focused on breaking past the 40% efficiency threshold. The cells have been in development for a few quarters.

Recent develop have refined their techniques to form a type of Nanoa Skin.
Source! Turns out the achieves have cleaned this piece of information out. Good thing I saved it. The researchers have made progress and are now claim they reached 90% efficiency. I can't explain why this didn't make the front cover of TIME or NYTimes.

Currently, Solar technology is roughly working at 20%~ efficiency, which is marginal by best putting the cost of watt in the number of dollars. Otherwise know as second generation cells. The most promising is 3rd generation cells which are half the efficiency of current PV cells. 9% is even worse with 3rd generation but considering they have doubled in recent years is saying a lot. The costs of those puppies is even lower. We might see solar technology drop below a dollar a watt before the decade is out. Some of us might hold our breath.

The 4th generation would be the NanoAntenna Solar-Skin. Lets make a new word today (NASS) for short, synonymous with a famous rapper. According to the article they claim lab test have showed these cells reached 80% efficiency. In standard English, this mean the cells produce electricity cheaper than conventional technology.




Again, why isn't this getting coverage is beyond me. NAS collects energy from infrared light.

And because it doesn't simply collect energy from the visible light spectrum, it even can harness the Earth's solar energy it stores during the day and radiates at night.


They are produced in a fashion that creates tightly packed gold coils together. The beauty of the system is, you can stack these cells on top of each other. The layers will also increase efficiency. The cells are either grown or printed on a polyurethane sheet. They are miniature 'heat magnets' that are really good at capturing heat. The only thing that is preventing this technology from taking off is transferring the energy into AC. As soon as that happens, expect everything to be covered in Solar!
