Novamont is a firm that is claiming the demand for bio plastic is growing 20% per year and will continue a upward trend past 2010.
Bio plastics are a great alternative to petro-based plastics because they use biomass to create a product that will break down to small particles within a year if the conditions are right. They are made from Corn, Soy, Sugarcane or a number of other materials. Paper of plastic? Well the argument here is, it can break down to small particles quicker but will it actually break down completely in a shorter period of time? I would pick bio plastic water bottles over BHT toxic to the core-based plastic any day.
